Damn I wish more SUV's and trucks came with rear mounted spares. I love it!

tell me about it. I am in the process of perhaps looking for a new rear bumper with a tire swing right now.

I'm thinking about doing the same with my Explorer. Either that or throw it in a roof basket. Can't decide yet.

My wife wants to get a Yakima SkyBox, but I want the basket. If she wins (let's be honest here, she probably will), then I'm definitely going for the rear mounted spare.

one like so?

Kinja'd!!!

The box is great because it keeps everything dry and on this trail we had to rescue some bags that fell off an open rack into a mud puddle from the truck ahead of us...where we had no such problems. The only advantage to a basket is in keeping stuff you WANT outside (tire, hilift, shovel, gas, etc)

Yea. Exactly like that. They sell them from time to time at Costco for pretty cheap. And when it comes to shovels and extra gas cans, I can store all of that in the back. It's been a while since I've actually done any good four-wheeling but I'm hoping to be able to get back into it with the Explorer.

I wont store gas inside my truck, but I usually travel with a buddy in a tacoma so I just stash my cans in his bed and I take something of his if he needs the room. The main issue is that the spare tire reduces my departure a lot, well actually the hitch is the main culprit but the hitch protects the spare from getting mangled. if I can get the spare moved I can take off the hitch and gain an extra few degrees departure AND make room for a spare tank, meaning I wouldn't have to carry any fuel cans.

I couldn't agree more. A vehicle just doesn't feel like a true off roader without a rear mounted spare. Too bad the carriers are so damn expensive.
